I wish I could write “What’s Wrong with Writing In Games”, as a follow-up to “What’s Wrong with Writing On Games”. But that’s too broad a topic.
So I’m narrowing it down to what I think is the most common sin of modern western AAA game writing: lack of authenticity.
Writing in Games and What Writers Do
When we say a book has bad writing we could mean the plot, the dialogue, the storytelling structure, the characters or the individual word choice.
On some games the writer doesn’t determine the plot, the structure or the characters. They may write the dialogue but not determine the tone and direction, what the dialogue is trying to communicate, or why it exists at all.
Nathan Drake spontaneously growing a brother may be “bad writing” but it may be the work of the studio head, the director, the creative director or the narrative designer1 rather than a writer.
